Friends and family gather to remember Fred Newman

FRIENDS and colleagues from throughout his professional life gathered in the ecumenical setting of the Meeting House on the campus of Sussex University on Saturday to commemorate the life of Fred Newman, co-founder of Publishing News and the Galaxy British Book Awards.
The service was led by the Reverend Canon Dr Gavin Ashenden, University Chaplain. But aside from the "In Paradisum" from Faure's Requiem, a quote by son Mark Newman from the Book of Psalms and a text from an Ancient Egyptian Pyramid - read, perfectly and poignantly, by Katja Quist, one his grand-daughters - there was nothing specifically religious. For as Mark Newman noted in his opening address, his father, though born into Judaism, "was not given personally to religious ritual [but] was not without faith and always respected the faith of others".
